Presbyterian Homes Affiliation

Q & A with CEO Greg Carlson

Why did Grandview affiliate with Presbyterian Homes?

First, we believe deeply in our Christian commitment to honor our elders. For nearly half a century, Grandview has been a leader in providing quality care in a dignified, compassionate way.

We always want to be good stewards of resources and to be prepared to meet the needs of the families we serve.

Given the strong, growing demand for senior housing and services, Grandview could no longer just maintain a status quo posture. In a challenging operational environment, with essentially flat government reimbursement rates and ever-rising costs, we need the larger, stronger foundation of a growing partner, a more experienced organization. The afflilation with Presbyterian Homes (PHS) enables us maintain our identity while having that stronger base from which to grow. We have improved our ability to thrive during a time of diminishing resources and rising costs. We are thus better able to offer our residents the very best.

Presbyterian Homes & Services is a highly respected leader and innovator in senior care. It has the broader experience, and considerable expertise, in many areas that can benefit Grandview as we grow.

Our collaboration with Presbyterian Homes goes back many years, in a number of operational areas. We enjoy a long, well established, partnership and friendship.

We are in a wonderful position to go forward in a bold, promising way – better and stronger.

Does Grandview still need private financial gifts from donors?

Absolutely, especially as we meet growing community needs. Private philanthropy is the meaningful difference our residents enjoy every day. Government reimbursements only cover a portion of our costs; community generosity must provide the rest.  Every nonprofit senior care organization struggles with the financial gap, the difference in what government provides and the true costs we must pay to operate a quality organization. We want to provide elders with programs and opportunities to live life to the fullest. Grandview’s annual fund helps to provide many of the essentials that make each day more enjoyable.

Will we notice any significant changes in operations?

People will notice very little outward change. Grandview maintains its identity and programs. At some point, our signs will indicate our affiliation with Presbyterian Homes and Services. The leadership and staff are not expected to change. And, as always, Grandview maintains its strong, close relationship with the faith community.

What are some of the benefits of the affiliation?

For nearly half a century, Grandview has always been responsive to the needs of the times. The affiliation with Presbyterian Homes strengthens Grandview’s capacity to better serve seniors and their families. Let’s consider the massive Baby Boom generation – the east central Minnesota region is among those areas with a growing population of older adults who will require senior housing and services. In the not-too-distant future, one-fourth of Minnesotans will be age 65 or older, and the number of seniors age 85 and older will triple.

Preparing to meet this so-called Age Wave requires strong leadership and innovative vision. Presbyterian Homes offers Grandview a depth of proven expertise, innovation, and programming excellence that will only benefit Grandview’s residents. Grandview can capitalize on this broader base of experience and benefit from proven best practices in areas of planning, financing, and marketing.

Also, as a partner of this larger organization we may realize certain economies that will help to keep costs as low as possible.

How can we learn more about Grandview in the months ahead?

We exist to serve our residents and their families. We will keep everyone fully informed through regular updates on the website and in the newsletters, annual report, and other communiqués.

Thank you for your ongoing support and faithful friendship.

Sincerely,

Greg Carlson
